Films reviews

WINTER'S BONE (2010 - EUA) Zebra Granik

Genre: drama/thriller

Synopsis: This film is about a younger who is seventeen years old that she has to look after her family which they live in uncertain situation in a rural area. She has to take care of his little brothers and his mother who is sick. His father has gone away while he was in conditional freedom after being on the prison. For this reason, she has to search his father in order to maintain the house.

Opinion: I have seen the film and I can say that the story fascinates me; maybe for the character's characterization. This is amazing and probably the thing which makes the film to stands out from another films. The director defines them like sad and not so much sociable people. They are the product of a lonely and isolated surrounding. From another poing of view, it was the first film which I could see Jennifer Lawrence performing. She is the main character and she carries out an authentic and brilliant interpretation. The film achieves putting you on tension all the time because you are suffering for the familiy's safety. Anyone wants to help the younger and this pushes her to do anything in order to achieve her objective: find her father. Finally, all the film develops on cold and distressing atmosphere and this reaffirms the cruel story and the difficult situation which has to face the younger.

LOPE (2010 - Spain) Andrucha Waddington

Genre: romance

Synopsis: This film is the biography about the famous writer Lope de Vega (1562-1635). The film explains a passionate and difficult love story from the poetry with two women. One of the women could help him with his professional career and the other represents the true love. Which woman will choose?

Opinion: I don’t tend to see Spanish films but I saw this film and I liked it. It is a very realistic film because it reconstructs the biography of Lope de Vega but without an historic punt of view. Well, the film is set in a historic atmosphere but the film doesn’t rebuild exactly his whole life, only a part. The Lope’s life was very intense and passionate; he had a lot of lovers and wrote loads of comedies and poems probably during the night or whenever the inspiration comes to him. While you are enjoying a fantastic love story, you can make and idea of how was his personality and how was the theatre life on that period. Moreover, on the film there are some pieces of Lope’s poems.

IN TIME (2011) Andrew Niccol. EUA

Genre: action / science fiction

Synopsis: This film is set on a future society. The people have a clock on their arms and when they are 25, the clock switches on. This means that the people stops growing up and they have to get time in order to live more years. But the differences between rich and poor people are extreme. The rich population can live a lot of years and the poor population has to fight every day to achieve more time. The protagonist achieves a lot of time and he is followed by a corrupt police.

Opinion: It is a very good futurist film and it seems very real. The story is very thrilling and keeps you in tension all along it  because the time of the characters is finishing and it means that they can die. This film has got an interesting background because it transmits a lot of values about the future society. I recommend the film to the people who like futurist and science fiction films.

50 FIRST DATES (2004) Peter Segal. EUA

Genre: romantic comedy

Synopsis: Lucy Whitmore has an accident and receives a blow on the head. This implies that she loses her memory. When she gets up every morning, she doesn’t remember the day before; it means that every day is brand new for her. Henry Roth (Adam Sandler) falls in love with Lucy but her lack of memory isn’t an impediment for their relation.

Opinion: This film explains a funny story which could be tragic but it isn’t. It also has sad and romantic scenes. The couple decides to create a family and be happy in spite of  Lucy’s problem. It shows that  love doesn’t have limits. The interpretations of the characters are wonderful. If you like comedy and romantic films, you will enjoy this film so much.

INCEPTION (2010 - United Kingdom) Christopher Nolan

Genre: science fiction

Synopsis: This film is about the dreams’ world. A group of people want to steal the secrets and ideas from a man through his subconscience for economic reasons. In the film there appears a parallel world from which the main characters will have difficulties to escape.

Opinion: On one hand, the special effects are very spectacular and they seem to be real. On the other hand, you have to be very concentrated to understand the story because the argument is very complex. Personally, I have seen the film twice and I still haven’t understood all of it.

MY LIFE WITHOUT ME (2003 - Canada) Isabel Coixet

Genre: Drama

Synopsis: What would you do if you knew that your life will end within a month? Ann, the main character decides to live her life with passion and enjoy every little moment. She makes a list with the ten things to do that makes her happy before she dies.

Opinion: Personally I think that it is a very human history. When you are watching the film you can't avoid thinking what would you do if you were Ann. I recommend the film because it hooks you from the beginning and you also will get thrilled during the film.

LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE (2006 - USA) Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris

Genre: dramatic comedy

Synopsis: The Hoover’s family are a very peculiar family. The grandfather sniffs cocaine. The mother is stressed. The father thinks that he is an unsuccessful person because all the things goes against him. The uncle is recovering from a suicide and the teenager son is doing a vow of silence. Finally, Olive, the youngest daughter, wants to be a beauty queen.

All the family goes to California because Olive has been invited to assist in a beauty contest. At this moment, their adventure starts.

Opinion: I believe that this film teaches you a lot of things, it is a film about personal overcoming. The film could be a tragedy but it is made with humouristic sense. The relation between Olive and his grandfather is very emotive. In the film we can see that despite the diferences between the members of the family, they help each other.

THE HELP (2011 - USA) Tate Taylor

Genre: drama

Synopsis: This film is based on a book. It is about the relation between the american families and the african helpers during the 1960s. All starts when a young journalist decides to write about the point of view of the african helpers.

Opinion: The message that the film want to transmit is serious but also there are some humoritic and emotive scenes. It is not only an historic film, it is a funny history in a difficult social context that the main character will change.
